AZSecure Cybersecurity Fellowship Program

Threats to our national cyber infrastructure are some of the most serious challenges to national security and economic stability that we face.

Developing a more secure, trustworthy cyberspace is essential, and attracting top talent for technical and managerial cybersecurity work has become one of the U.S. government's highest priorities.

The federal CyberCorps Scholarship for Service (SFS) program provides funding for schools and universities to offer generous cybersecurity scholarships to students, in exchange for service in the federal, state, local or other levels of government.

With projections of needing to fill at least 10,000 cybersecurity-related positions in the government and another 40,000 in private industry in the near future, the career outlook for cybersecurity experts is extremely positive.[1]  The AZSecure Cybersecurity Fellowship program helps draw top MIS students into this important and rewarding field. Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering students studying cybersecurity are also eligible to apply.


The AZSecure Cybersecurity Fellowship Program

With funding from the National Science Foundation, the AZSecure Cybersecurity Fellowship program offers full scholarships to qualified U.S. students, in exchange for public service.
What does the program involve?  Our AZSecure program is a two-year, on-campus program.  Through coursework in the University of Arizona's Management Information Systems (MIS) degree and electives in MIS, Computer Science (CS), and/or Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) departments as well as our online NSA-recognized Enterprise Security Certificate, Fellowship students emerge with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the cybersecurity workforce.  In addition to receiving a strong information security education, SFS students also participate in independent studies resulting in a Master's thesis, other relevant publications, extra-curricular activities, and timely placement support.
Who is the program for?  The program is primarily for eligible U.S. MIS Masters students, who receive two years of full funding.  A limited number of fellowships may be available to MIS Ph.D. students (up to 3 years of funding).  See the Eligibility page to see if you qualify.  Note that most positions will require a security clearance, and hence the program is only open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents
What is the required public service?  In exchange for the funding, the students serve a qualifying, paid summer internship and commit to working in federal, state, or local government service in a qualified agency for two years following graduation. The length of public service is equal in length to the scholarship period.  For example, a Ph. D. student receiving 3 years of funding would serve in a public position for at least 3 years. Most positions will require a security clearance. 

NOTE:  All course work and research is conducted at The University of Arizona Tucson campus.  Other than the courses in the Enterprise Security Certificate (MIS 515, 516, and 517), the AZSecure program is not available online or through satellite campuses.

The AZSecure Cybersecurity Fellowship program produces top-notch students with a strong background in Information Assurance as well as excellent technical, managerial, and research skills. Our students have been placed in internships and permanent positions in a variety of top government security agencies, labs, and other locales with a 100% success rate.  Placements have included the Department of Defense, National Security Agency, national labs, and a host of other federal, state, and local agencies.

In addition, the Management Information Systems Department has been consistently ranked within the top five programs (public and private) for the last 28 years. The AZSecure curriculum leads students through significant cybersecurity and information assurance coursework and independent research, offering a well-rounded information systems education that includes coursework in enterprise computing and security, analytics and data mining, and system and software design.

AZSecure is one integrated component of the Artificial Intelligence Lab's focus on Cybersecurity Research and Education.
